ABOUT THE EUGENE GRID PROJECT

he Eugene Grid Project is a group photography effort organized in March 2008 to systematically photograph the metro Eugene/Springfield region neighborhood by neighborhood. The project is based on a similar model currently underway Portland.

We've divided a map of Eugene/Springfield into a grid of 60 equal squares roughly one square mile each. Every month a square is chosen at random (denoted by a letter and number, e.g. C7) to designate an area to be photographed by the group members. There are no limitations on what can be photographed beyond that it be recorded while standing within the area designated by the map, and there is no specific time for making photographs. They can happen any time during the month. At the end of each month, the group gathers to share work and decide on the next square.

The goals of the project are to make interesting photographs, become intimately familiar with the local geography, and leave a lasting visual document of the region. The Eugene Grid Project will take roughly five years to complete.
